Ask The Artist

  • We create original fine artwork focusing on the landscapes of our greatest mountains, national parks, and flora. We also provide signage, prints, and illustration work. We create for private commissions, galleries, and businesses!

  • Wood burning is the process of utilizing a wood burning kit, consisting of a series of tips heated by a power box, that you use to burn into various pieces of wood. Utilizing pressure and temperature, you can create shading, details, heavy strokes, and one of a kind designs.

  • It all starts with an idea. It could be an idea from a client, or a lightning striking at midnight thought. From that idea, a sketch either on a pad of paper or iPad is done to bring that one idea, or a series of ideas to compare, to life. Clients often provide reference photos, notes, and other inspirations for their idea.

Once that idea is approved, the process becomes very similar to a tattoo! I will either draw the outline of the design on tracing paper, or directly onto the wood. When it comes to signage, in order to lock in the preciseness of the lettering, I’ll often work on tracing paper, before burning the outline onto the wood through the paper. Then it is all burning and shading as you go from there. if it’s a natural scene or landscape, Ill draw a basic pencil outline directly onto the wood, and then burn and shade by hand from there, so you know you’re getting a one of a kind piece.

  • A few different sources! If I go local here in Austin, I will buy from Harvest Lumber Co in East Austin. If I shop online, it’s typically from Walnut Hollow for some pre-cut items or The Lumber Shack for live edge hardwoods.

  • Yes! I love the challenge of working with a new shape, be it a table, ax handle, or a new species of wood. Ensuring it is stripped of all varnishes or top coats ensures an easier process for me and a cheaper process for you!
